Hello, this is Learning Korean with Koreans.
Today, in our first lesson, we'll be discussing greetings.
Korean greetings
As you probably already know,
one of the most common greetings is "안녕하세요" (Annyeonghaseyo).

This greeting is used in various situations:
1. (Slightly bowing your head or waist) 안녕하세요
- Appropriate in most situations, regardless of age or profession.
- Not considered awkward unless you're very close friends.
- Used when meeting someone, not when saying goodbye.
2. (Waving your hand or just saying it) 안녕
- Common among close friends.
- It's okay to use with someone younger,
but starting with "안녕" when meeting someone younger may not be well-received.
- It's a friendly way to greet young children.
- Avoid using it with people significantly older.
- In romantic relationships, it's fine to use regardless of age.
Easy-to-remember greetings:
✅ When Meeting
- (Formal) 안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo)
- (Informal) 안녕 (Annyeong)
✅ When Saying Goodbye
- (Formal) 안녕히 가세요 (Annyeonghi gaseyo) / 들어가세요 (Deureogaseyo) / 잘 가요 (Jal gayo)
- (Informal) 안녕 (Annyeong) / 잘 가 (Jal ga) / 들어가 (Deureoga) / 조심해서 가 (Josimhaeseo ga) / 조심히 가 (Josimhi ga)
These are commonly used greetings,
so knowing just one formal and one informal version should suffice for now.
